Since opening it’s doors in 2009, Carbon has been a staple of the North Toronto community for nearly a decade. Carbon is a contemporary lifestyle fashion store catering to men and women of all ages, drawing it’s vast array of products from all around the globe. Owners Alex and Sharon Mazelow travel extensively to bring their customers the best of what is being offered in the marketplace, striving always to find superior materials and fabrication in contemporary and relevant styles and silhouettes at a competitive price point, and showcases some of the world’s most relevant brands, both new and emerging, as well as classic and established staples.
Alex and Sharon work together to run the stores on a daily basis. They live in midtown Toronto and have three children; Jack, Liv, and Dylan.
Alex: Alex began his career in retail after graduating from McGill University. With a little bit of savings and a big dream, Alex opened the first Carbon location ten years ago just south of where the current Lawrence Park store is now. After a few years, his soon-to-be wife, Sharon became involved in the business and it grew to include ladies and kids clothing. Alex left the business for four years to pursue an MBA, and after graduating, worked at the HBC corporate office for three years. Alex left HBC in 2015, returning to Carbon with his sights set on expansion. Now with three stores, Alex focuses on the management of the business operations.
Sharon: During a shopping trip with a friend, Sharon discovered she had a knack for selling clothing, both to her friend, and as it turned out, to the other customers in the store. She was offered a job at the boutique on the spot and spent four years there, eventually being offered a management position. It was in 2010 that Sharon came to work with her future husband Alex, and together they built the business to include men’s, ladies, and children’s clothing, shoes, and accessories, operating three locations in Toronto. Sharon assists with the daily operations, but is primarily focused on the sourcing and buying of the product, and of course, selling it!
